What can I expect in my first class?

You will receive kind and instructive attention.

Do I have to commit to doing this long term?

You’re invited to observe a class and try two weeks at Bay Marin Aikido. There’s no obligation or pressure to join our dojo. You won’t need a gi (white pajamas) or other equipment.

How much does it cost?

Costs for adults vary depending on commitment. The mat fee for dropping in on a class is $20. The mat fee for members is $15 per class (after initiation fee). You may also may monthly, quarterly or by the year. We charge $110 per month for unlimited classes for adults and $70 per children. There is a discount for quarterly and yearly payment.

Do I need to be an athlete?

There are many benefits to Aikido. You don’t need to be an athlete to learn this martial art. When practicing Aikido, you’ll integrate an awareness of your mind, body and spirit.

Does this take a lot of strength and flexibility?

Aikido builds strength, flexibility, and stamina. Participants will also find that their balance improves greatly with regular Aikido practice. People come to Aikido with all levels of fitness and the art is designed to meet participants where they are at in terms in overall health and fitness. 

Can I do this if I have a limitation, disease or disability?

In most cases physical limitations or chronic conditions will not be a problem. It is important to let the instructor know ahead of time if this is the case, so they can modify the class or the Aikido technique as necessary. 

Is it necessary to have done martial arts before, in order to train at Bay Marin?

Everyone is welcome at Bay Marin Dojo, regardless of past martial arts experience. 

Can I do this if I have a short attention span?

We have an open and relaxed teaching atmosphere. You do need to pay attention in order to learn how to bow in and bow out of class properly. During class, techniques are repeated consistently and everyone is encouraged to ask questions if something is not clear. With practice, it is possible to learn all Aikido techniques. 

How long will it take to be proficient?

Like any skill, the more you practice and participate at the dojo, the more accomplished you become. Everyone’s journey is different but you may be ready to take your first exam (5th kyu) in 6 months, with regularly weekly practice.

How long does it take to get a black belt?

In general you can achieve Shodan (1st degree blackbelt) within 5 to 7 years, with 3x week of practice.
