Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect in my first class?
You will receive kind and instructive attention.
Do I have to commit to doing this long term?
You’re invited to observe a class and try two weeks at Bay Marin Aikido. There’s no obligation or pressure to join our dojo. You won’t need a gi (white pajamas) or other equipment.
How much does it cost?
Do I need to be an athlete?
There are many benefits to Aikido. You don’t need to be an athlete to learn this martial art. When practicing Aikido, you’ll integrate an awareness of your mind, body and spirit.
Does this take a lot of strength and flexibility?
Can I do this if I have a limitation, disease or disability?
Is it necessary to have done martial arts before, in order to train at Bay Marin?
Everyone is welcome at Bay Marin Dojo, regardless of past martial arts experience.
Can I do this if I have a short attention span?
We have an open and relaxed teaching atmosphere. You do need to pay attention in order to learn how to bow in and bow out of class properly. During class, techniques are repeated consistently and everyone is encouraged to ask questions if something is not clear. With practice, it is possible to learn all Aikido techniques.
How long will it take to be proficient?
Like any skill, the more you practice and participate at the dojo, the more accomplished you become. Everyone’s journey is different but you may be ready to take your first exam (5th kyu) in 6 months, with regularly weekly practice.
